Types of Insurance Needed When Working With Children

    March 14th, 2012 by bujes.marketing

Given the capriciousness of children and the level of importance we attach to them, you can imagine the amount of risk involved in caring for them.

While it may be unpleasant to consider a child being injured or dying while in your care, there are no guarantees such a tragedy wouldn’t happen. Any business that involves working with children must obtain a strong public liability insurance plan to safeguard their finances should an incident occur.

    Liability Insurance

Most cases tend to involve accidents where children will need medical care. If your business or employees acted negligently or failed to institute proper safety measures, then you will be responsible for all healthcare costs associated with the injury. Most policies will have a deductible of around $400 to $800, above which the insurance company will cover the costs.

    Other Types of Insurance

Other types of insurance you should consider is extending your car insurance to cover children you may need to transport. If your business is critical to your finances, you may consider disability insurance to cover days when you are incapacitated. If you run your business out of your home, talk to your home insurance agent to find out if coverage can be extended to provide liability coverage for your business.

Is It Really Worth It To Start Your Own Business

    March 13th, 2012 by bujes.marketing

If you live in the United States, sooner or later you are probably going to consider the option of starting your own business. I cant think of too many people that havent given it some consideration at one point or another. Many of them dont take it seriously, but some do. If you are someone who has thought about it seriously, then maybe you have also considered whether or not it is really worth it.

I speak from firsthand experience on this one. I have been in business for more than a decade, actually almost two decades now. I can tell you with all my heart that it is not all it is cracked up to be. Dont get me wrong. There are benefits to being your own boss. It is not how you imagine it being though. Trust me on that one. There is a lot of crap to put up with.

The government red tape is ridiculous. Suppose you wanted to start a small dog grooming service. Do you even know if you need a license to become a dog groomer? You had better find out first. Otherwise you risk getting slapped with fines or even shut down if you need some kind of permit or license and you are operating without one.

If you are thinking about hiring employees you are opening up a whole other can of worms. Then you have a lot more paperwork to deal with. You have to deposit withholding payments every month with the IRS. Dont be late. There are fines for that too.

Unless you are in a really business friendly state, dont be surprised when you get slapped with fines from your state department of tax and finance. It happened to me more than once. I cant express how frustrating it is when you get a fine in the mail for some piece of paperwork you never filed three years ago when you had no idea that you were supposed to file this meaningless piece of worthless paperwork. And no, it is not common sense. The paperwork they want you to file is ridiculous.

Yes you do have an opportunity to earn more money than you may be earning working for someone else. However, I have known a huge number of small business owners over the years. I promise you that you way overestimate how much money most of them are making. I worked in a business where I got to see a lot of financial statements from these small businesses. The vast majority of these small business owners could have made more money working for someone else. Building a successful business that is really profitable and actually lucrative for the owner is way harder than it looks.

You might think you know a lot about business already just based on your own experience and some good common sense. I promise you are wrong in thinking this too. You really dont understand how little you really know about running a small business until you have thrown yourself into it. That is when you realize that certain things, like your marketing skills, play a huge part in whether or not your business will succeed beyond that first struggling year. Most people underestimate how hard it is to get customers and to keep them. It is way harder than it looks.

Im not saying any of this to scare you off. Just keep in mind that you probably dont know as much as you think you do. I guarantee you are far less prepared for the job than you think you are. Some day you may actually learn how true that statement is.
